The Baltic Sea Region is currently undergoing significant economic, social, cultural, political and security changes. Of the nine states in the Baltic Sea, eight are members of the European Union and NATO, so that the Baltic, from the perspective of these structures, is almost an internal sea. The ninth state is Russia, which plays a special geopolitical role in the region with its considerable military potential, which determines the policies and actions of both NATO and the EU. Also, Norway, despite not having direct access to the Baltic Sea, is an important player in the region, being a member of the NATO and the European Economic Area.
The Baltic plays an increasingly important role for Poland, including its energy security, which is related to the construction of wind farms, a nuclear power plant on its coast and the fact that most of the natural gas and oil imported to Poland is delivered by ships and underwater pipelines. The economic importance of Polish seaports is increasing, as they serve as important hubs in global supply chains connecting eastern markets with Central Europe and Western Europe. (…)
This book is a collection of studies on co-operation in the Baltic Sea Region between Poland, Lithuania and Russia (Kaliningrad Region) in intergovernmental and interregional dimensions, as well as on security issues.
