Čiurlionis’s symphonic poems Miške (In the Forest) and Jūra (The Sea) are his only surviving symphonic works available in both short score and fully orchestrated versions. Both demonstrate the artistic inspiration he drew from the nature of his home country. Čiurlionis was profoundly touched by the Lithuanian landscape, especially the forest near Druskininkai, where he spent his childhood. He often portrayed Lithuanian nature in his paintings, incorporating his emotional connection to this specific landscape. In a letter to his wife Sofija Kymantaitė on 19 November 1908, he openly expresses his desire to create a symphony “from the murmur of waves, the mysterious shimmer of the centuries-old forest, the blinking of the stars and our little songs”.
Čiurlionis started composing a symphonic work for a competition held in Warsaw after his friend Eugeniusz Morawski encouraged him in 1900. It comes as little surprise that Čiurlionis called his composition “In the Forest”. Winning the competition would have earned him a prize of 1000 rubles, which would have provided him with financial security for the first few months of his studies at the Leipzig Conservatoire in Germany, where he would be taught by the renowned composer Carl Reinecke.
The present edition of the Complete Works of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was established with the goal of publishing the composer’s complete musical oeuvre in the most authentic manner. The published compositions provide a musical text ideal for in-depth musicological study, omitting all artefacts such as dynamics, tempo indications, and articulation markings introduced by previous editors. Exclusively primary sources were used, such as Čiurlionis’s manuscripts and the few editions released during his lifetime. The edited score for each work is accompanied by a detailed critical report in English, Lithuanian and German.
The Complete Works is divided into three series (Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, and Unfinished Works / Sketches), consisting of eleven groups and fourteen volumes in total.価格(税込み) \66,550
