Čiurlionis commenced work on his symphonic poem Jūra (The Sea) on 8 December 1903, and he completed the instrumentation on 13 May 1907 – a gestation period of more than three years. There are eight primary sources at our disposal located at the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum (Nacionalinis M. K. Čiurlionio dailės muziejus), from which the composer’s creative process during those three years can be described accurately. From the very first sketches, which are located in the composer’s notebook Čm 6, to the extended sketches (Čm 19) and short scores (Čm 17 and Čm 21), and finally to the two full scores (Čm 1 and Čm 18), it is evident that Čiurlionis approached the composition of this large-scale orchestral work with remarkable methodical precision. The present edition of the Complete Works of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was established with the goal of publishing the composer’s complete musical oeuvre in the most authentic manner. The published compositions provide a musical text ideal for in-depth musicological study, omitting all artefacts such as dynamics, tempo indications, and articulation markings introduced by previous editors. Exclusively primary sources were used, such as Čiurlionis’s manuscripts and the few editions released during his lifetime. The edited score for each work is accompanied by a detailed critical report in English, Lithuanian and German. The Complete Works is divided into three series (Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, and Unfinished Works / Sketches), consisting of eleven groups and fourteen volumes in total.
